We found it easy to use and responsive, but the autofocus could be better. The P8 recognises faces quickly and tracks them well. It takes about a second to focus, which isnât too bad, but if we werenât focusing on faces it needed help to pick the right subject to focus on. The P8 has some fancy camera modes that help people to capture creative and enhanced images without needing any technical know-how. Light painting is probably the most complex of the Huaweiâs photo modes and helps people to capture photos with a range of different effects, such as Car light trails, star tracks and smooth flowing experimented with some of the light painting modes, a tripod or stable surface is definitely required to produce anything half decent The mode works by using slow shutter speeds to allow the camera to capture light for longer periods of time, but saves people from having to learn about shutter speeds. If you can hold the phone steadily enough â Huawei recommends using a tripod â the results are decent and it can be fun experimenting with light. Itâs an accessible way to introduce people to some advanced photographic technique. The cameraâs 8-megapixel front-facing camera is ideal for selfies and comes complete with some built-in beautyâ tools, to help scrub up our otherwise ugly mugs. Huawei needs to get its naming conventions in order. While its premium line of âPâ phones gets a new number every year weâre now up to P10, the P8 Lite keeps its name despite being an entirely new phone in the Lite range. Even more bonkers is that itâs actually a new, more expensive device than the P9 Lite. Confused? Us too. Away from the peculiar naming convention, the P8 Lite is a decent budget handset that takes on the likes of the Motorola Moto G4 while managing a premium-looking design and adequate performance. The P8 Lite is available for ÂŁ149 SIM-free from Vodafone, although your device will be locked to the network operator. You can also pick up a handset from third-party sellers on Amazon for around ÂŁ170. Note that availability is wildly inconsistent, so itâs hard to imagine that youâd even find a P8 Lite unless youâre with Vodafone. Hopefully stock will begin appearing as the year wears on. Editorâs Note Due to the recent retraction of Huaweiâs Android license, future Huawei and Honor phones wonât be able to access Google Play Services and as a result many Android apps including YouTube and Gmail. Both Huawei and Google have confirmed Huawei and Honor phones, like the one in this review, will continue to have access for this time being. Until we know more about the situation weâre leaving the scores on all our Huawei reviews, however as the situation changes weâll revisit this. Huawei P8 Lite â Design and Build Iâm a huge fan of the P8 Liteâs design. It has a smooth, curved composition that isnât entirely dissimilar to the more expensive Samsung Galaxy A5. Its frame is comfortable to hold, and it looks attractive. Flip the device over to see the completely glass back, which is very Google Pixel. Thereâs no physical home button on the front, but you still get a fingerprint scanner in Huaweiâs favoured, rear-facing position. Whether you prefer this will be down to how you use your phone; personally I favour a front-facing scanner, especially when there are no screen-off gestures to enable you to check notifications without pressing the standby button. Others like the placement on the rear since itâs naturally where their index finger rests when picking up the phone. In the top-left corner youâll find the camera lens and flash. The lens sits behind the protective rear glass, while the flash is protected by a super-slim ring of silver plastic. On the front, the phone is uncomplicated. A Huawei logo sits on the bottom portion of the bezel, while the left and right sides of the bezel are nice and thin, further assisting this phoneâs svelte design. At the top thereâs the front-facing camera, earpiece and LED notification light, which is always welcome. Volume and standby buttons sit on the right of the handset. If I were to be fussy, which I am, Iâd say the buttons are weirdly slippery and hard to grip when youâre trying to change volume or wake the phone. The dual-SIM slot is also on the right. Instead of rocking two SIM cards, the 16GB of built-in storage can be expanded to 256GB with the addition of a microSD card. It appears a little stingy not include at least 32GB of storage, but SD card support does ease the pain slightly. Thereâs a Micro USB charging port on the bottom, which is starting to look a tad old-fashioned in 2017, although not a rarity on budget phones, and a headset jack on the top. All in all, the P8 Lite offers decent design for a budget phone and definitely feels far more expensive than it actually is. Annoyingly, that sheen wears off fairly quickly the rear of the device picks up scratches shockingly easily. In particular, the rear corners suffered irreparable marks following only a few days of use. Whatâs more, that glass back makes the phone very slippery on uneven surfaces. On more than one occasion the device found itself sliding towards a hard floor before I caught it. Internally, the P8 Lite features all the mod-cons youâd expect, including NFC and Bluetooth Note, however, that the Wi-Fi radio is only rated up to old-world N standard, not AC. This means the device wonât see higher-speed 5GHz networks and thus will be incapable of delivering scintillating download speeds. Although not a given on a phone this cheap, it would have been a nice inclusion. Huawei P8 Lite â Display The P8 Lite features an acceptable screen for the money, being equipped with a Full HD display with IPS technology. Vibrant colours looks fine, if nothing special â but the screen has one party piece it can go ridiculously bright when need be. Youâll have no problem using this device on a bright day; the blindingly bright screen genuinely gives the sun a run for its money. The screenâs colour tint can be adjusted using Warm and Cold settings, and you can also give it a tinge of whatever colour you want. Itâs a weird addition and Iâm not sure how useful it is, but Iâm sure someone, somewhere, will appreciate whites with a tinge of purple or lime green. You can configure the screen to light up when you receive a notification, plus the coloured LED notification light pulses with new notifications. Depending on the app, youâll be able to choose which colour this LED flashes on receiving a new notification. Related Best cheap smartphones Huawei P8 Lite â Performance and software The P8 Lite is powered by a HiSilicon Kirin 655 processor. This is an eight-core chip with four high-speed cores and four low-power cores for background tasks. Itâs accompanied by 3GB of RAM, which is par for the course. Considering the price of the P8 Lite, and if you rein in your usage a little, performance is acceptable. If upgrading from an older, budget phone, the P8 Lite is likely to feel fairly nippy. However, if youâre downgrading then youâll notice the second-long pauses as you open apps, stuttering as media-heavy apps load, and occasional fits and starts when you werenât doing anything particularly intensive. My first two days with the P8 Lite were very poor indeed, but after those first 48 hours performance improved markedly. I canât say why, but it was most welcome. For fans of benchmarks, it scored 56,213 in the AnTuTu benchmark, which is a little less than youâd expect from a mid-range phone. At its ÂŁ150 Vodafone price, this is fine. But as you get closer to the ÂŁ200 mark, devices such as the Lenovo P2 and Moto G4 put it into the shade. The P8 Lite runs Android 7 âNougatâ, which is the latest version of the OS. Running atop Android 7 is Huaweiâs own Emotion UI. Youâll have likely read reviewers complaining about EMUI in the past, but I can happily say that the latest version, 5 offers a huge improvement on whatâs come before. Huawei has gradually loosened its grip on the OS, letting you change more options than ever before. This includes the addition of an app drawer, lots of homescreen and notification pane customisation, and all the best bits of Android 7 â including better notifications. Thereâs a built-in small-hand-friendly floating button that mimics the Back, Overview and Home buttons at the bottom of the screen, and weirdly has a shortcut to close all the apps currently running on your phone. You can move the button around the screen to wherever is most convenient for your thumbs. The worst part of EMUI is its insistence that all the apps on your phone are consuming huge amounts of battery power. It constantly popped up warnings that the likes of WhatsApp, Facebook, Spotify and The Guardian were consuming lots of power in the background. These can be turned off, but only for individual apps. Itâs a real faff, though. Related Best smartphones Huawei P8 Lite â Audio The P8 Liteâs speakers are found on the bottom of the device, either side of the micro-USB port. Theyâre not brilliant and donât really do justice to music or video. Theyâre fine for speech, but youâll definitely want headphones or external speakers if you want to pump out some tunes. One thing to do before you start listening to music is go into audio settings and switch off âHeadset SWS effectâ itâs awful, and adds lots of muddy bass for no good reason. Turn it off, however, and youâll get your music the way the artist actually intended. The microphone is loud and clear, and voice calls were conducted without incident. The basic specs on paper show a rear-facing camera with a 13MP resolution, and a front-facing camera with a 5MP resolution. Both these sensors are made by OmniVision, and you can see some further information about the P8 Lite's cameras in the chart below. Camera Specifications Huawei P8 Lite Front Camera 5MP 2592x1944 Front Camera - Sensor OV5648 ”m, 1/4" Front Camera - Focal Length 22mm eff Front Camera - Max Aperture F/ Rear Camera 4208x3120 Rear Camera - Sensor OV13850 ”m, 1/ Rear Camera - Focal Length 27mm eff Rear Camera - Max Aperture F/ The Huawei P8 Lite buys you a lot of camera for a $250 smartphone. With a 13MP resolution and a 1/ sensor size, the P8 Lite's rear camera is in the same league as phones like the Nexus 6. The F/2 aperture is also quite large, and from my testing Huawei appears to have kept distortion under control while reaping the benefits of the additional light collected with the wider aperture. It seems that OmniVision gets a bad reputation in the mobile space. However, I think the P8 Lite is a testament to how much of a difference good photo processing can make, and how many of the perceived issues with OmniVision sensors are really just the result of poor ISPs image signal processor and image processing. As far as image quality goes, I have absolutely no major complaints about the P8 Lite's rear camera when taking photos during the day. There's good detail preservation and sharpness, without the harsh shadows and over sharpening that I often see with cameras on less expensive devices. My only complaint is that the P8 Lite skewed the white balance of this scene toward blue, which made all of the colors seem colder than they actually were. Despite this, the color saturation, sharpness, and detail are all great for a $249 device. In low light the P8 Lite seems to stumble a bit. This doesn't appear to be any fault of the sensor, although a 13MP camera with micron pixels won't exactly be a master of low light photography. Rather, it's clear that Huawei's heavy noise reduction is having a negative impact on image quality. The entire photo is fairly devoid of detail, and has an appearance that looks somewhat like an oil painting. This has done a great job of removing the noise in the photo, even in the sky, but it has also smeared away all of the detail. It's clear from the exposure and white balance that you could actually take some decent low light photos with the P8 Lite if the noise reduction wasn't so heavy, and I hope Huawei can address that in the future. Overall I'm fairly happy with the P8 Lite's photo quality considering its $249 price. It's definitely the best camera I've seen at this price point due to its well balanced processing during the day. Noise reduction in low light definitely needs to be toned down, but even then the photos end up being better than many other low or mid range devices simply due to the more accurate exposure. Video Quality While still images are the product of both the camera sensor's quality and the quality of the processing performed by the ISP, videos skew even more heavily toward the abilities of the ISP as there needs to be a sufficient level of processing done to each frame in a timespan measured in milliseconds. The P8 Lite uses the ISP built into Qualcomm's Snapdragon 615 SoC. While ISPs are still pretty much black boxes, Qualcomm has noted in the past that the feature set for S615's ISP is more closely related to the ISP in the Snapdragon 800 series SoCs than the Snapdragon 400 SoCs. The Huawei P8 Lite has a maximum video resolution of 1920x1080, and it records at 30 frames per second. Video is encoded at 20Mbps using the baseline profile. Unfortunately, the video quality of the Huawei P8 just isn't near as good as still images in the same lighting, highlighting either some limitation of the ISP or an issue with what processing is being applied. There's a general blurriness across the frame, with very little detail on the grass or the sidewalk. The camera's focus locks at the beginning of the video which means turning to look at a different area for a moment is often out of focus, and this is made very evident when turning to look at the red bushes. There's also some sort of issue with the audio where the right channel starts and stops working as it pleases. While the daytime image quality of the P8 Lite is very good, the video quality is definitely not something I would consider to be a selling point. WiFi Performance adoption isn't that widespread yet, and buyers of devices like the P8 Lite are unlikely to have routers unless it's built into the modem provided by their ISP. Despite that, devices like the ASUS Zenfone 2 have spoiled us a bit by delivering support in a $200 device. The Zenfone 2 is often an exception to the rule though, and the P8 Lite only ships with support for on the band. With a peak speed over UDP of 59Mbps, the P8 Lite falls in line with the other devices on the chart. Since the P8 Lite costs $250 and is positioned as a mid range device I'm disappointed that there's no support for 5GHz networks, as it leaves users on the increasingly crowded band.
